Program Outcomes

The Basic Fire Fighting Certificate allows departments to demonstrate that their fire fighters possess the minimum fire fighter skills within NFPA 1001.

 Topics include:

  • Fire Fighter Safety
  • Personal Protection Equipment & Self Contained Breathing Apparatus
  • Rope and Knots
  • Ladders
  • Ventilation
  • Fire Hose, Fire Streams and Appliances
  • Water Supplies
  • Fire Behaviour (optional)

The Basic Fire Fighting Certificate also provides credit toward NFPA 1001 Fire Fighter I for subjects completed and evaluated through the Basic Certification process.

Overview

The Basic Fire Fighting Certificate provides all British Columbia Fire Department members with the basic training to serve their communities.

To achieve the Basic Fire Fighting Certificate, individuals must successfully complete the applicable written examinations and practical evaluations administered by the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC), Fire & Safety Division for the courses from the NFPA 1001 Standard, Fire Fighter I.

Upon completion of the program, the fire fighter is awarded a Certificate of Achievement.

All courses in the Basic Fire Fighter Certification Program are evaluated by JIBC-certified personnel.

Practical evaluations are conducted at the fire department once an individual has completed Basic Train the Trainer.

Admission Requirements

The program is open to Fire Service personnel only. Prerequisites are based on fire department criteria.
