Best Practice Development
An essential part of our work is to strengthen skills and best
practices in key areas. Recent best practices projects undertaken
by the Centre for Counselling and Community Safety (CCCS) include the development of a toolkit for counsellors to
use in supporting children whose parents are mentally ill. Working
closely with a variety of stakeholders, staff conducted focus groups,
researched the current literature, produced a variety of child-centred
tools, and created a manual for distribution to social service agencies.

Curriculum Development
Responding to requests from government ministries, community agencies,
and private sector organizations, CCCS develops curricula in a number
of different content areas. Working closely with employees and employers,
we identify the required competencies, develop instructional plans,
design curricula, and field-test newly developed materials.
In Her Own Time: Measures of Empowerment for Women
Who Have Experienced Violence Curriculum and Training Video
In 2001, CCCS received funding from the National Crime Prevention
Strategy to develop a one-day workshop on the results of the Measures
of Empowerment research conducted by Victim Services Division in
2001. The one-day curriculum, which has been delivered six times
in various locations in B.C., had the following objectives:
- To share the findings of the Measures of Empowerment Study,
in particular the approaches and strategies women who experienced
violence found empowering;
- To examine the meaning of empowerment for women who are victims
of violence;
- To explore empowerment strategies that can be used by victim
service workers to support women involved in the justice system;
and
- To encourage a collaborative approach among justice system
personnel, victim services and other support systems working with
women to facilitate empowerment practices.
A video with the same title has also been developed. The four main
empowerment strategies that emerged from the research are illustrated
through the stories of four women who sought help from the justice
system. The workshop is available for delivery to community organizations
and agencies on contract. See Publications and
Videos for more information on how to purchase the video and
discussion guide.

Post Employment Training
CCCS designs and delivers post-employment training for a number
of employers. We provide the core training for the province’s
victim service workers on behalf of the Ministry of Public Safety
and Solicitor General and design and deliver a wide range of child
welfare training for employees of the Ministry of Child and Family
Development on behalf of the Education Alliance.
Project Management
Our project management activities range from managing high-profile
events on a one-time basis to coordinating major training initiatives
on an ongoing basis. We have the capacity to manage all of the required
tasks, from developing curriculum to evaluating program effectiveness.
