Adult Probation Officer

Adult Probation Officers provide management to adult offenders released to community supervision, helping to reduce the risk of reoffending. In British Columbia, Adult Probation Officers are employed by the B.C. Corrections Branch, Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General.

Prerequisite Training

Applicants for Adult Probation Officer positions in British Columbia must successfully complete the following prerequisite course offered only by the Justice Institute of BC:

APO155: The Adult Probation Officer ($250)
Next course begins March 8, 2010.

Completion of APO155: The Adult Probation Officer, is NOT the only requirement to apply for the position of probation officer. You will also be required to meet post-secondary educational requirements, achieving a Level 5 of the Language Proficiency Index and subject to a criminal record review and police record check. Please review the applicant Information Package (under 'Hiring Process', below) for a complete list of requirements.

Please note:

  • APO155, when completed, is valid for two years from the date of completion.
  • Candidates who have worked as an Adult Probation Officer in another Canadian jurisdiction or as a Youth Probation Officer in British Columbia within the previous two years for a period of at least two years are not required to complete the prerequisite.
  • APO151: Adult Probation and Criminal Court Process and APO101: Role and Mandate of an Adult Probation Officer are no longer equivalent courses to APO155.

Target Audience

This course is for persons interested in working in the criminal justice field as Adult Probation Officers, including:

  • Staff from correctional settings;
  • Community service agency employees;
  • Individuals experienced in social services;
  • Probation officers, volunteer probation officers or probation staff from other jurisdictions; and
  • Other personnel in the justice, law enforcement, and human service fields.

We also welcome registration from any interested individual, including those from other provinces or countries.

Hiring Process in British Columbia

The B.C. Corrections Branch has two positions in the adult probation field:

  • Adult Probation Officers work with adult offenders released to community supervision. Hiring requirements include a Bachelor's Degree. Details are in the Information Package [PDF, 159kb].

  • Probation Officer 14s perform many of the same duties as Adult Probation Officers, but the hiring requirements don't include a Bachelor's Degree. Details are in the Information Package [PDF, 106kb].

Applicants for both Adult Probation Officer and Probation Officer 14 must also successfully complete the prerequisite course listed above. Completion of the prerequisite course does not guarantee employment but is only one of the criteria necessary to apply for either position in British Columbia.

Important: The onus is on the applicant to confirm hiring criteria with the B.C. Corrections Branch, including specific educational qualifications. Please note that the hiring criteria for employment includes completing the Language Proficiency Index (LPI) to a minimum of Level 5, and possessing computer and keyboarding skills to a minimum of 30 words per minute. Successful applicants will also undergo a criminal records review and police record check.

Regular and auxiliary employees with an employment start date of April 1, 2008, or later will be eligible for a reimbursement amount of $250 upon a successful six month performance review.
