Academic Credentials

Meet all four levels of the NFPA 1021 Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications with a credential from an IFSAC and ProBoard® accredited post-secondary institution.

This program is open for any firefighter who wants to become an officer, and for current fire officers looking to advance their careers by completing the requirements for the NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Professional Qualifications. 

Program Strengths

The program covers the four levels of the "NFPA 1021 Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications" and focuses on the specific competencies of the standard. It holds dual accreditation from both ProBoard® and IFSAC, and is Canada's only accredited NFPA I-IV program.

It is a standards-based program providing a practical, relevant and interactive education focused on the job requirements and responsibilities of fire officers in the service. Subjects are taught in a flexible, primarily online format.

What You Need to Graduate

This program is divided into four levels of graduation eligibility corresponding to the NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Standard.

  • Fire Officer I  
    Provide your NFPA 1001 certification and successfully complete the required courses.
  • Fire Officer II  
    Provide your NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Level 1 certificate from a ProBoard® and/or IFSAC accredited institution and successfully complete the required courses.
  • Fire Officer III  
    Provide your NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Level II certificate from a ProBoard® and/or IFSAC accredited institution and successfully complete the required courses.
  • Fire Officer IV  
    Provide your NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Level III certificate from a ProBoard® and/or IFSAC accredited institution and successfully complete the required courses.

Program Format

Courses are offered for students either online or in a classroom.

Online course offerings must be completed within the stated period of time, generally within one month from the start date of the course.

STEP TWO - Register For Courses

After your application has been approved, please register for courses directly with Registration Office at 604.528.5590 or register@jibc.ca.

You are encouraged to complete your application at least two months before you wish to take your first course in the program. Once an applicant is accepted, we suggest registering as quickly as possible to avoid disappointment. The number of seats in each class is limited.

Required Documents

  • A copy of your IFSAC or ProBoard® accredited NFPA1001 certificate.

Q: When are the JIBC NFPA 1021 Completion Certificates issued?

A: They are printed and mailed to graduates on a quarterly basis.

Certificates are produced in February, May, August, and November for students who have completed the program in the relevant preceding three-month period. If you do not receive your certificate, contact the Fire & Safety Division.
