NFPA Standards
Meets National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards for fire prevention inspectors, investigators and public fire educators.
Academic Credentials
Obtain an academic credential by an institute with courses accredited by the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) and the ProBoard®.
This program is designed for self-paced adult learners who want to pursue fire prevention training.
It is primarily open to students who are employed by a fire department, law enforcement agency, insurance or investigation company.
Program Strengths
Most courses in this program are accredited by IFSAC and ProBoard®, and are designed to meet the competencies and training established by the National Fire Protection Association for fire prevention inspectors, investigators and public fire education. Completion of this program ladders into the Fire & Safety Studies Diploma.
Outcomes
- Function effectively as a Fire Prevention Officer within a fire department or fire safety team.
- Provide strong leadership in a fire prevention role or in an entire division.
- Perform fire inspections, investigations, education and training.
- Plan and manage fire department resources – personnel, financial and equipment.
- Prepare written reports and communications.
- Plan, implement and evaluate fire department training and prevention programs.
What You Need to Graduate
The program consists of 22 courses, totaling 30 credits. Students who successfully complete all the courses will receive the Fire Prevention Officer Certificate.
Program Format
Courses are offered either online or in a classroom.
Online course offerings must be completed within the stated period of time, generally within one month from the start date of the course.

- Proof of employment with a fire department, law enforcement agency, insurance or investigation company. (Applicants who do not meet the foregoing requirements may still apply to the program and will be considered for enrollment on a case-by-case basis that will consider standards and guidelines laid out in NFPA 1031, 1033, 1035 as well as the applicants background and current occupational responsibilities combined with letters of reference/support.)
