Employee Experience
Culture and Values…
The JIBC strives to provide a working environment that is respectful, collaborative, supportive and caring
“ …I know that when I have a problem I can get help not only from my colleagues in the library, but also from other employees in the different academies… Also, as an employee I feel that I am trusted. I know my manager trusts me to get the work done and that she knows I contribute to the best of my ability”, Roxanne Wise, Library Technician.
Support for the Community…
Not only has tangible employee support resulted in the JIBC being recognized six times at the United Way's gold level, the JIBC also sponsors a loaned representative to the annual United Way campaign. Employees compete for this opportunity and privilege to give back to their communities while gaining increased confidence and skills working in a very public and different role. Other employees give of their time by participating in the United Way's Day of Caring.
Health & Wellness…
The JIBC recognizes the importance of employee wellness at all levels – physical, spiritual and mental. Employees are encouraged to participate in organized physical activities such as onsite basketball, aerobics, yoga and Pilates at the New Westminster campus. Employees take the opportunity to walk or run at lunchtime or after work, or use the Canada Games Pool facility located adjacent to the main New Westminster campus. A quiet room is provided at the New Westminster campus for those who wish to spend time in prayer or meditation during their working day. The challenge of work/life balance is met by providing generous time off benefits as well as flexible work options.
Flexible Work Options…
“Due to flexible working hours, you don't have to sacrifice your family responsibilities while you work“, Sukhi Brar, Paramedic Academy.
Flexible work hours and schedules, part time and job share opportunities, as well as Flex days for union staff and Personal days for excluded staff, provide many ways that employees to balance the operational needs of their role and their personal lives. For those wishing to plan a significant break from work, the JIBC offers its employees a deferred salary leave plan.
Recognition…
At the JIBC we know that all of the people we work with make an important contribution towards meeting our vision and mission. Learning and other significant achievements are celebrated in the weekly e-newsletter, on the intranet and at general staff meetings. The annual JIBC Awards program, sought after as a model by others in the post-secondary education sector, provides an opportunity to publicly show our appreciation and recognition to those who make an extra contribution to the JIBC's strong reputation in the field of public safety education. Each year, awards are made to instructors, alumni, “friends of the JIBC”, and the prestigious President's Award to an employee nominated by their peers as someone who has most exemplified the JIBC culture and values in their daily work.
