“Integrity, honour, and commitment.”

Those three words figured prominently in Marissa Antoniazzi’s valedictorian speech in the deputy sheriff graduation ceremony held November 9 in the JIBC Theatre.

“Today we sit amongst you in our ceremonial tunics, representing our brothers and sisters in the BC Sheriff Services, and our pledge to remain true to the core values of our agency: integrity, honour, and commitment,” said Marissa, speaking on behalf of the 34 deputy sheriff graduates from Class 11-02 trained by JIBC’s Sheriff Academy. It’s the largest recruit class in BC Sheriff Services history.

Shirley Bond, BC Attorney General and Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, attended the ceremony, along with Social Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux and Dave Hayer, MLA for Surrey-Tynehead.

“We appreciate the commitment and dedication these new recruits have demonstrated during their training so that they can begin their important work in courtrooms across the province,” said Minister Bond.

“I have a really special place in my heart for this institution, and I’m also incredibly proud of the excellence of the faculty and the programs that are offered here,” she added about JIBC.

Marissa thanked the Sheriff Academy’s instructors for their support during the intensive 10-week training program at JIBC, which covers driver training, firearms, force options, communications, legal studies, report writing, controlled access points, and physical fitness. “Throughout the program, you have given us the chance to succeed by allowing us the opportunity to fail, providing us with feedback and constructive criticism, and then allowing us to move forward with greater confidence. Through your professionalism, dedication, and commitment, you have compelled us to reach our full potential, and have inspired us to duplicate your success in the field.”

The deputy sheriff recruits will now progress to field training under the direction of deputy sheriff training officers before beginning their positions with the Court Services Branch of the Ministry of Attorney General. Deputy Sheriffs are responsible for maintaining security in all BC courthouses, including protecting members of the judiciary, the public, court staff, prisoners, and accused persons.

Tracey Ternoway, JIBC Vice President, Finance and Administration, spoke at the ceremony on behalf of President Jack McGee, who was travelling with the Premier’s Trade Mission in China and India. “The ultimate measure of the success of JIBC as a learning institution lies in the accomplishments of you, our graduates,” she said. “I urge you to maintain a passion for learning, to use the knowledge and skills you’ve acquired to make a difference in the lives of others, and to strive to accomplish great things in your careers.”
