Continuing Education Courses

The Centre for Professional Health Education offers a variety of opportunities for lifelong learning including in-person and online courses, workshops, seminars, and certificate programs.

This includes Heart and Stroke Foundation Canada (HSF) Basic Life Support (CPR/BLS) for Health Care Provides and Advanced Care Life Support (ACLS), International Trauma and Life Support (ITLS), and JIBC courses.

Group Training Courses

JIBC has provided training courses to hospital staff, paramedics, fire departments, search and rescue personnel, medical and dental offices, and other institutional health care and service providers in Canada and internationally. If you are interested in training for your group, team, or staff please contact cpd@jibc.ca for more information. Training can be delivered at a location of your choice or at a JIBC campus.

Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR (HCP-C) Certification

Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR Heath Care Provider Level C (HCP-C) Certification (Heart and Stroke Foundation)

Prerequisite:

  • Participants must be healthcare providers or trained first responders who provide care to patients in in-facility and prehospital settings or require BLS certification and CPR training to enter into a healthcare-related training program.

Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR Heath Care Provider Level C (HCP-C) Renewal/Update (Heart and Stroke Foundation)

Prerequisite:

  • Current Heart & Stroke BLS Provider certification (taken within the last 12 months and current to the most recent Guidelines release) or successful completion of the online Heart & Stroke BLS Renewal Prerequisite Challenge. Students without one of these prerequisites are not permitted to attend the Heart & Stroke BLS Renewal/Update course. Certification card must be presented on the first day of class.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Provider

(Heart and Stroke Foundation)

Prerequisite:

  • Current and valid certification in Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada BLS/CPR-C (HCP) and course completion card. CPR courses completed through Red Cross, St. John Ambulance, etc. do NOT satisfy the CPR pre-requisite. Certification card must be presented on the first day of class.
  • Complete the mandatory Pre-course Self-Assessment and provide certificate. Note: Students are given direction on how to access the Student website in their ACLS Provider Manual. The student website provides important supplementary information and videos, as well as a link to the Pre-course Self- Assessment. The mandatory Pre-course Self-Assessment requires a passing score of 70% or higher to print the certificate. Students can take the Pre-course Self-Assessment as many times as needed to achieve a passing score.

Prerequisite:

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Instructor's Course

(Heart and Stroke Foundation)

Prerequisite:

  • Participants must be physicians, nurses, or pre-hospital care workers who have current ACLS Provider status. Certification card must be presented on the first day of class.

Other:

  • Upon successful completion of the classroom module, participants must be monitored during their initial teaching session. Any costs associated with monitoring are the responsibility of the student and are not included in tuition. International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) – Basic

Prerequisite:

  • Must be an entry‐level EMS provider with suitable qualifications who functions within their scope of practice. Acceptable qualifications include first responders, paramedics, licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, lifeguards, ski patrol, QL3 and above. Students may be asked for proof of employment on the first day of class.

International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) – Advanced

Prerequisite:

  • Must be an advanced‐level practitioner who can perform advanced procedures who is certified or licensed and who functions within their scope of practice. Acceptable qualifications include ACP paramedics, registered nurses, physicians, physician assistants, SAR Techs with RTM/QL5A and above.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

(Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada Authorized)

Prerequisite:

  • Healthcare providers who either direct or participate in the management of respiratory and/or cardiovascular emergencies and cardiopulmonary arrest in pediatric patients, as well as others who need a PALS course completion card for job or other requirements.
