Emergency Medical Responder
The EMR course offers fundamental medical training for anyone entering the health care field.
The course focuses on developing the skills needed to respond to trauma and medical emergencies. Training also includes the fundamentals of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology and medical terminology.
There are two versions of the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) course:
Who Should Take This Course?
The course equips you with the necessary skills to gain employment in a broad-range of areas, including: ambulance services, fire departments, police, ski patrol, lifeguarding, search and rescue, occupational first-aid, and military.
In addition, many graduates have used their training as an excellent foundation for continued studies in other areas of health care; such as nursing, respiratory therapy, kinesiology, occupational therapy, and even medical school.
Format
Both courses are offered in Full-Time and Part-Time formats.

Evaluation and Certification
Upon graduation from the EMR course, you will receive:
- Emergency Medical Responder Certification
- CPR Certification – Level C Health Care Provider (HCP)
- 4 Credits towards High School Graduation
- 2 Post-Secondary Credits at certain BC Institutions
By completing the EMR course, you will also become eligible:
- To apply for Emergency Medical Assistant licensure in BC and/or Alberta.
- To apply to the Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) Program.
- To apply to the Diploma in Health Sciences in EMS Program.

These books are available through the JIBC Store; however, students have the option to purchase the textbooks elsewhere. Please contact the JIBC Store for cost and ordering.
Prerequistes
There are no prerequisites for the EMR100 Course.
To qualify for entry into the Accelerated EMR120 Course, students must have successfully completed an approved prerequisite course within the past 3 years. Courses that currently meet requirement for EMR120 entry include:
- Previous EMR Certification, Occupational First-Aid Level 3 (OFA3), First Responder Level 3 (Spinal/AED Endorsed), Advanced Wilderness First-Aid, Advanced Medical First Responder, or a course that is deemed equivalent by the JIBC. (Typically approved courses have greater than 80 hours of advanced first-aid instruction).
Please Note – Prerequisite courses must have been completed within the past three (3) years.
Language Requirement
It is highly recommended to have completed ‘English 10’ or higher.
Students who do not meet this criteria, or who are ‘English as a Second Language’ (ESL) candidates, please contact us prior to registration.
