Sex Offender Risk/Needs Assessment
A key aspect of working with sex offenders is assessing the likelihood of reoffending. The STATIC-99R and STABLE-2007/ACUTE-2007 are widely used actuarial risk and needs scales for the assessment of sexual offenders and the probability of sexual and violent recidivism.
Extensive research has demonstrated that structured, actuarial risk/needs measures are more accurate than unstructured professional judgment for predicting recidivism risk and providing supervision for sexual offenders. Given that the risk factors and case management for sexual offenders are not the same as for other criminal offenders, specialized risk/needs assessments are critical when evaluating this population of offenders.
Who Should Take These Courses
Our sex offender courses have been designed for professionals conducting risk assessments and/or providing case management and supervision with sexual offenders, including probation officers, parole officers, police officers, institutional classification officers, forensic social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists.
Although the training is primarily directed to those with no prior experience with risk/needs assessment measures, the courses would also be of interest to current users seeking to refine and consolidate their expertise.
The co-creator of STATIC-99 and STATIC-99R, Dr. Karl Hanson, has a video message for those interested in taking the courses:
