Career Fire Fighter Pre-Employment Certificate
Overview
The program prepares individuals to apply for the position of Career Fire Fighter, although successful completion does not guarantee employment.
As part of that preparation, the student will received certification to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Standard Fire Fighter I and II, Hazardous Materials – Response to the Operations Level, First Response Level III with Automatic External Defibrillators and Spinal Management endorsement, and three additional certificates of achievement.
You will receive certification to:
- Career Fire Fighter Pre Employment Certificate (30 post-secondary credits)
- NFPA 1001 Fire Fighter I & II certificate (with IFSAC and ProBoard seals)
- NFPA 472 Hazardous Materials – Awareness Level (with IFSAC and ProBoard seals)
- NFPA 472 Hazardous Materials – Operations Level/Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents (with IFSAC and ProBoard seals)
- NFPA 1051 Basic Fire Suppression and Safety I (with IFSAC and ProBoard seals)
- NFPA 1006 Chapter 5 Basic Rescuer Skills (with an IFSAC seal)
- First Responder Level III with AED and Spinal Management
- Emergency Vehicle Driving Regulation – Non-Police
Format (Learning Format/Structure)
Students will learn through theory, lectures and practical drills. Evaluations are both written and practical.

Admission Requirements
- High school graduation or equivalent
- A valid class 5 BC Driver’s License or equivalent
- Airbrake Endorsement or equivalent, or proof of successful completion of a recognized Air Brake course
- Current Driver’s Abstract
- Current CPR Level "C”
- Medically Fit – Student will be notified with details by the JI once application has been submitted
- Physically Fit – Student to be notified with details by the JI once application has been submitted to arrange Physical (CPAT)

Other Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of one year accumulated work experience after High School; preferably in work related to the needs of the Fire Service:
- Building construction, mechanical experience, driving large or emergency vehicles, fire
service, first aid, nursing, paramedic experience, truck driving, etc.

- Successful completion of a post-secondary education program:
- Academic, technical or trades training
- Ability to swim and related life saving certificates
- Fire Service related courses
- Knowledge and understanding of different cultures and fluency in a language(s) other than English (may include sign language)
- Currently active in community service work
- Demonstrated use of small tools such as chainsaw, drills, etc.

NOTE: Successful applicants to the program will be informed at least 15 business days prior to Orientation day.
Acceptance into the Program is not a guarantee of employment. Hiring is done by individual fire departments, not the JIBC.

The above list of text books are mandatory and are required to be purchased before Orientation at the JI Store in New Westminster so that students can bring them to Orientation for reference. The approximate cost of the required textbooks is $257.95 plus tax, (prices are subject to change).
Required Uniform
It is now mandatory that each successful student entering the Career Fire Fighter Program to purchase their uniform for the 3 month program. Students may purchase this only at the JI Store (for cost please contact the store directly at 604.528.5870). Please do not purchase these items unless you have a confirmation letter accepting you into the Program and an order form sent by us. Please see below the list of items required for day 1 of class :
Mandatory items to be ordered:
2 - Navy Station Pant (Have pants hemmed)
2 - Navy Uniform Short Sleeve Shirts
2 per shirt - Fire & Safety Crests (Have crests sewn on Navy Uniform Short Shirt (Ask staff at store where to place crests on sleeves)
1 - F&S Navy Short Sleeve Gym T-shirt (2 Recommended)
1 - Pair of Black steel toed safety boots & 1 Black Leather Belt
*Note: Belt & Boots are mandatory to have but it is not mandatory to order from JIBC Store (Boots must be Steel Toed and able to hold a shine)
*Note: Baseball Hats are NOT worn on-site at the Maple Ridge Campus.
