Who Should Take This Program

The program is required for anyone wanting to drive a Taxi in Metro Vancouver, Abbotsford and Chilliwack.

This program may be required for other professions requiring a Chauffeurs Permit. 

Please check with your local police department and/or municipality before making a TaxiHost Pro application.

TaxiHost Pro will provide students with a strong working knowledge of local geography, driver safety customer service, and road skills.  The program is designed to elevate the level of taxi service in the Metro Vancouver area to be among the best in the world.

Taxi 160 Taxi Industry and Driver Safety

Overview

This course provides a review of taxi operations (pre- and post-trip inspections, money transactions, trip sheets, taxi stands, etc.), rules and regulations, map book skills, Global Positioning System (GPS) and major routes and destinations within the Metro Vancouver region. Taxicab drivers are victims of assault and homicide at a level that is one of the highest of any occupational group in North America.  The course includes strategies to identify ways for drivers to reduce risk of assault, reduce conflict with customers, and take action to minimize risk when violence occurs.

Learning Objectives

This course provides students with the basic knowledge of the taxi industry, local geography and driver safety.

Format (Learning Format/Structure)

This course consists of 13 hours in a classroom setting; this is completed over two days.  Students will be required to successfully complete a two hour written exam (Taxi 165)** after finishing the course.  The exam will be scheduled approximately five to seven days after the course ends.

Taxi 170 - WorldHost and Serving Customers with Disabilities

Overview

These topics in this course include: the importance of customer service skills, the importance of tourism in the provincial economy, making a positive first impression, tips for improving communication, serving customers with disabilities, handling customer concerns, effective listening, and managing change. The course will also review appropriate language for discussing the eight major disabilities (impairments of mobility, agility, vision, or hearing, and blindness, deafness, mental disability, and mental illness).  Principles for transporting people who experience specific disabilities will be discussed.

Learning Objectives

This course focuses on the importance of customer service when dealing with the public.  It also provides basic information about transporting customers with disabilities.

 Format (Learning Format/Structure)

This course consists of 10 hours in a classroom setting; it is completed over 2 days. Students must successfully complete a final quiz on the last day of class.

Taxi 180 - Collision Avoidance Driving

Overview

This course combines in-class and hands-on driver training.  Five participants are enrolled per class and each person is given ample time to practice new driving techniques and receive feedback from the instructor, other participants, and the on-board computer analyst that registers the smoothness of braking, accelerating, and steering.  Participants practice strategies to prevent collisions and receive feedback about their personal strengths and weaknesses as drivers.  This course helps drivers develop the key attitudes and road skills required to be a safe professional driver.  (Students must bring BC Driver’s License for this class)

This class provides students with the knowledge and skills to be a safe professional driver.

Format (Learning Format/Structure)

 7 hours

This course consists of one hour in a classroom, followed by hands-on practical training for the duration of the day.  A vehicle is provided by JIBC.

Students must successfully complete a final quiz at the end of the class.

Prerequisites

  •  Successful completion of the TaxiHost Assessment

Admission Requirements

  • Attend a TaxiHost Assessment;
  • Complete a TaxiHost Application Form (attached);
  • Pay the TaxiHost Program Application Fee;
  • Present a valid BC Driver’s License (Class 1, 2 or 4 BCDL is required to obtain Chauffeur’s permit)
  • Pass the TaxiHost Basic Geography Test;
  • Demonstrate evidence of English language proficiency to the TaxiHost Program Assessor and/or pass the TaxiHost English Proficiency Test at Vancouver Community College.

Applications must be completed in-person and can be obtained from the registration office at JIBC New Westminster campus.

$495  plus $25 Assessment Fee
