Publications

Violence in the Lives of Sexually Exploited Youth and Adult Sex Workers in BC: Final Report

Published in 2006, this research involved interviewing people from rural and urban areas across the province about violence in their communities.  The report includes highlights from 5 areas of BC (Kamloops, Victoria, Campbell River, Terrace and Hazelton, and Prince George).  It also includes an outline of recommended best practices for supporting a sexually exploited youth through the court system in cases where an offender is brought to trial.

This is a report published in 2000 by the Assistant Deputy Ministers’ Committee on Prostitution and the Sexual Exploitation of Youth, including a jurisdictional scan and literature review.

Effective Youth Collaboration and Engagement: Key Issues

Prepared by CASEY, a Prince George working group on sexual exploitation, this report provides a useful account of the issues that researchers face when working with vulnerable populations and concludes with thoughtful recommendations for respectful and ethical collaboration.

Examination of Innovative Programming for Children and Youth Involved in Prostitution

This study was conducted by the FREDA Centre at SFU.  A prairie-based research team worked with sexually exploited girls to identify important issues and concerns about policy and programs dealing with sexual exploitation.  They look specifically at service provision and aim to identify strategies for intervention.

Commercial Sexual Exploitation: Innovative Ideas for Working with Children and Youth

This manual presents a framework for working with commercially sexually exploited children and youth, and innovative ideas for programs to deal with this social problem. Topics include the legal meaning of “commercial sexual exploitation” within a rights-based framework, meeting the needs of youth through a continuum of services and examples of programs that are considered to be examples of innovative and promising practices.

Internet-based Sexual Exploitation of Children and Youth Environmental Scan 2005

Produced by the National Child Exploitation Coordination Centre (a division of National Police Services), this scan provides a background on the history of child pornography and technological advances and provides an overview of the many areas of concern for law enforcement.  Available for download from their website.

Right Turn From Nowhere: Examining the stories of perpetrators in the youth sex trade

An action research project that worked with a sample of men in the Lower Mainland of BC who were arrested and referred to a restorative justice program for “communicating for the purposes of prostitution”. The research examines preventative strategies to address sexual exploitation through in depth and detailed interviews with the “johns” and other support staff who offer strategies to address the research questions.

Publications and Research with Aboriginal youth

Full Circle: a manual on sexually exploited Native youth issues in Vancouver

The Urban Native Youth Association have published this report on Aboriginal youth and sexual exploitation.  The manual provides basic information about sexual exploitation, existing services and a continuum of care, recommendations for services and ways that the Native community can address sexual exploitation.

Sacred Lives

Conducted by Aboriginal researchers Cherry Kingsley and Melanie Mark, this research involved consulting with more than 150 sexually exploited Aboriginal youth across Canada.
