JIBC Research Ethics Board Response to COVID-19

JIBC continues to adapt to the COVID-19 situation and the challenges of conducting research while maintaining the health and safety of research participants, students, staff, faculty, and the general public. Currently, there are physical and social distancing measures in place for the safety of all Canadians, which is also impacting research.

All JIBC research and projects that collect data through physical and/or social interaction such as focus groups and face-to-face interviews must be restructured and use other data gathering methods to protect the health and safety of all Canadians.

For more information please consult the JIBC Research Ethics Board Response to COVID-19.

Research involving human participants is surrounded by ethical issues that are both complex and in a constant state of renewal.

In response to this changing landscape, the three federal research agencies – the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) – recently updated its joint policy, the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans.

This Policy “expresses the Agencies’ continuing commitment to the people of Canada to promote the ethical conduct of research involving humans.”

Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans

Complying with the TCPS 2 is a condition of funding for researchers and their institutions, and forms the basis of the Research Governance model and policies and procedures pertaining to research involving human participants at JIBC. As stated in the introduction to the TCPS 2, to “be eligible to receive and administer research funds from the Agencies, institutions must agree to comply with a number of Agency policies set out as schedules to a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Agencies and institutions.”

JIBC requirements
