About the Event

This seminar aims to support an open discussion around response to the emerging threat of lithium battery fires.

About the speakers: The visiting speakers are Tony McGuirk and Gary Taylor. Tony is from the United Kingdom and has 40 years of operational experience, including 10 years as Chief Fire Officer. He was awarded the Queens Fire Service medal for his operational leadership and became a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) for his fire safety and prevention services. Tony worked internationally for much of his career, especially in Europe and North America. In 2015, he worked as Executive Director with the NSW Environment Protection Agency (EPA) in Australia. Tony managed disaster and crisis responses throughout New South Wales for three years. In this role, he developed a keen interest in the dangers/hazards of new energy technologies, including lithium-ion battery systems and solar energy.

Gary has had a long (30-year) career as an operational firefighter and commander. He has introduced a series of innovations and has extensive experience designing operational procedures, equipment, tactics, and techniques, as well as incident command and control. In addition, through his passion for motorsport, he is a highly accomplished engineer.

They now own a small consultancy company (Packattack Ltd.) specializing in reducing and managing fires involving lithium batteries. Their fire risk reduction model has positively impacted the waste industry.
