10th JIBC Foundation gala and awards ceremony takes place November 30

Thomas Berger and Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond among award recipients to be honoured at Gala

JIBC will celebrate a milestone on November 30, 2011. The 10th JIBC Foundation Awards for Justice and Public Safety will be celebrated at the Hyatt Regency Vancouver to recognize and acknowledge the contributions of individuals and organizations to the safety of families, communities, and businesses across the province.

The Gala, generously supported by presenting sponsor Scotiabank and media sponsors The Vancouver Sun and The Province, will feature a three-course banquet, a live auction - with proceeds going toward financial support for JIBC students - and the presentations of awards to the following:

The Anthony P. Pantages, QC Medal is being presented to Thomas Berger, OC, OBC for his years of distinguished service to the legal profession and his contribution to maintaining the integrity of Canada’s system of equitable justice and its attendant jurisprudence.

The Dr. Joseph H. Cohen Award is being presented to The Honourable Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond for her uncompromising advocacy on behalf of children and youth, and leadership in protecting their rights and improving the system for their protection and support, as British Columbia’s first Representative of Children and Youth.

The JIBC Foundation Heroes & Rescue Award is being presented to:

Firefighters Without Borders Canada for contributions to the advancement of emergency service organizations in developing countries

Canadian Forces Captain (Retired) Trevor Greene, who was severely injured while serving in Afghanistan and has made significant and inspiring progress in his recovery, for bravery in the field of battle and inspiring courage in the face of personal tragedy and adversity

Robert Mackay, one of the heroes of Vancouver’s 2011 Stanley Cup riot, for extraordinary courage and valour demonstrated during the 2011 Stanley Cup riot.

The JIBC Foundation Community Leadership Award is being presented to Allan De Genova, Director and President of Honour House for his effort in establishing this facility to temporarily house military personnel and first responders along with their families, in the Lower Mainland, while they receive treatment for injuries suffered in the line of duty.
