JIBC honours National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

Today, Dec. 6, JIBC flags will be flying at half-mast in memory of the 14 young women who were singled out because of their gender and murdered on December 6, 1989 at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal.

Nearly all of these young women were engineering students and were at various stages of their studies and careers:

• Geneviève Bergeron, 21, second-year engineering student;
• Hélène Colgan, graduating mechanical engineering student;
• Nathalie Croteau, 23, graduating mechanical engineering student;
• Barbara Daigneault, 22, graduating mechanical engineering student;
• Anne-Marie Edward, 21, chemical engineering student;
• Maud Haviernick, 29, second-year metallurgical engineering student;
• Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz, 31, first-year nursing student who arrived in Montreal from Poland with her husband in 1987;
• Maryse Laganière, 25, budget clerk in the finance department of École Polytechnique;
• Maryse Leclair, fourth-year metallurgy student;
• Anne-Marie Lemay, 22, fourth-year mechanical engineering student;
• Sonia Pelletier, 28, graduating mechanical engineering student;
• Michèle Richard, 21, second-year metallurgical engineering student;
• Annie St-Arneault, graduating mechanical engineering student;
• Annie Turcotte, 20, first-year metallurgical engineering student.

In 1991, the Parliament of Canada established December 6 as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
