Thanking today’s heroes, supporting tomorrow’s, and marking a special day
Throughout May 5, the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) took part in Giving Tuesday Now – the global day of giving and unity organized in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Showing support for health care workers and the emergency services family
In the evening, JIBC took part in the parade past Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster at 7 p.m. with several JIBC training vehicles, including ones from the Paramedic, Police, Corrections and Sheriff academies and a fire truck from the Fire & Safety Division. It was a special moment, as JIBC joined representatives from organizations including the New Westminster Police Department, New Westminster Fire & Rescue Services, and Metro Vancouver Transit Police to thank those helping to keep our communities safe at this difficult time.
Appeal raises funds for new Emergency Assistance Fund for students
The JIBC Foundation raised funds through the Giving Tuesday Now appeal for a new Emergency Assistance Fund created to help JIBC students facing unexpected financial challenges, both now and in the future.
The sudden impact of the pandemic has caused unexpected financial challenges for students who have lost work, and many are struggling to pay their basic expenses such as housing. In April, JIBC received funding from the provincial government to help students in need of emergency financial support because of the pandemic. The demand for help has been significant. Over 70 applications were received in the first 10 days, and JIBC expects to exhaust these funds quickly.
To help tomorrow's heroes in their time of need, please donate to the Emergency Assistance Fund

JIBC employees connect for Giving Tuesday Now at virtual coffee break
In the spirit of Giving Tuesday Now’s theme, around 50 employees joined together for a virtual coffee break in the morning to catch up, play a game, hear about the Giving Tuesday Now appeal and watch a specially-recorded musical performance by three talented staff.
