JIBC to honour former Premier Bill Bennett

Flags at all JIBC campuses to fly at half-mast to recognize Premier Bennett’s contributions to B.C.

Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) is flying flags at half-mast at all its campuses to honour the life of former Premier Bill Bennett who passed away December 3 at the age of 83.

During his tenure as the 27th Premier of B.C. from 1976 to 1986, his government brought the 1986 World Exposition (Expo 86) to Vancouver, and launched the construction of the Coquihalla Highway, Skytrain, the Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre, the Alex Fraser Bridge, and the development of Whister Resort to name just a few.

Premier Bennett also played a key role in the establishment of JIBC, signing the order-in-council in April 1978 that designated JIBC as a unique public post-secondary educational institution focused on providing education and training for public safety professionals.

A 2007 recipient of the Order of BC, Premier Bennett also received an honorary degree from JIBC in 2011 in recognition for his commitment to public service.

Dr. Michel Tarko, JIBC President and CEO, said, “On behalf of JIBC, I want to express my sincere condolences to Premier Bennett’s family and friends on his passing.”
