Critical Incident Stress Debriefings

Learners will develop the practical skills and knowledge to apply the critical incident stress debriefing (CISD) process in order to successfully participate on a critical incident stress management (CISM) team. In this course, learners will examine and explore the steps of a CISD, assess when to use a CISD, identify the dynamics that may emerge during the debriefing process, and demonstrate proficiency in conducting a CISD. Learners will have the opportunity to develop their own debriefing style, experience situations that might interfere with the normalization process, identify how a CISD can be adapted to incorporate Traditional Knowledges and cultural practices and discuss the importance of self-care in maintaining their role as a debriefer. There will be a strong emphasis on skill development and practice through the use of case scenarios.
