What is the JIBC Indigenous Youth Career Camp?
A day camp for Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) youth ages 18 to 24.
The camp promotes interest in careers in justice, public safety, and health care through applied education, cultural experiences and connections, and engagements with a wide range of community partners at multiple JIBC campuses.
The camp provides opportunities to meet new friends from across British Columbia, connect with Elders and Knowledge Keepers, have fun, and learn in a culturally safe and supportive environment. Join us to reflect on your gifts and how they might be applied to exciting and impactful careers.
Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers, Encouraging Connections

The Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) believes bringing Indigenous people and perspectives into the fields of justice, public safety and health care is essential to achieve our national goal of Truth and Reconciliation. As the fastest growing demographic in Canada, Indigenous youth will make up a significant portion of British Columbia’s future workforce. The JIBC Indigenous Youth Career Camp – Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers, Encouraging Connections aims to build youth resiliency, establish positive relationships, and introduce youth to the broad spectrum of careers in justice, public safety and health care.
This year’s camp offers a variety of in person activities on JIBC’s New Westminster and Maple Ridge campuses.
There is no cost for youth to participate.
Camp Objectives
- Provide an innovative and applied educational experience grounded in Indigenous culture.
- Inform participants about careers in justice, public safety and health care.
- Provide information on post-secondary prerequisites, course planning, admissions and criteria.
- Support cultural connections with Elders and Knowledge Keepers.
- Support connections with Indigenous and non-Indigenous professionals in a variety of partner organizations.
Corrections and Court Services Division (CCSD) provides training to Sheriffs, Corrections and Probation Officers (Youth and Adult), as well as Family Justice Counsellors. Come spend some time with us and gain a greater awareness of how we, as justice and public safety professionals, intersect with the community as a whole. Learn the ways in which we, as dedicated Peace Officers, work collaboratively with the courts, police, and Indigenous justice partners throughout the province, to uphold the values of fairness, dignity and respect. Discover how our select roles support an overarching goal in creating positive outcomes/changes in the lives of the individuals, families, and communities we work with. And, most importantly, ascertain if we are a good fit for you! We look forward to our time together, CCSD!

Do you know how to survive a zombie apocalypse? How could the world have been better prepared for COVID-19? Learn about this and more in our Emergency Management Division session! Emergency management is the prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery toward disasters and emergencies. This session will focus on two key aspects of emergency management: individual preparedness and community preparedness. What can you and your community do to be more resilient in the face of disasters and emergencies?

Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) program is a prerequisite course for future paramedics. This program teaches the fundamentals of responding to trauma and medical emergencies and can help launch your career in emergency medicine. During your day with the JIBC the EMR team, we will demonstrate basic life support and teach you the fundamentals of CPR and airway management.

We are excited to offer Indigenous youth a one-day firefighting camp being held at the Maple Ridge Campus. A firefighting career is filled with rewards, challenges, and excitement! This one-day firefighting camp will enable all youth to understand and experience what it is like to be a firefighter. The day is full of fun activities using fire extinguishers, ladders, hose lines, SCBA’s and more. Each participant will be put through the paces under the watchful eye of experienced professional firefighters and by the end of the day, all participants will have a greater appreciation and understanding of what it takes to become a firefighter!

Through a variety of experiential activities, this session will encourage participants to:
- Explore their personal values,
- Examine their individual communication styles,
- Learn about the importance of collaborative conflict engagement, and
- Reflect on their potential to engage and lead authentically within their chosen professions
Are you ready to make a difference? Spend a day with the JIBC Police Academy to experience the training that police recruits go through to prepare to make a difference in their given communities. On the day you will take part in Force Options Training, Simulated Firearms & Safety, Police Dog demonstration and speak with Vancouver Police Recruiting to see what it takes to make a difference as a police officer in B.C.
