Career Overview
Youth Supervisors are frontline workers in BC’s youth custody centres. They ensure the safety and security of the youth, staff and volunteers in the custody centre. In addition, Youth Supervisors provide advocacy and assistance, and participate in delivering programs to youth in custody.
Preparing youth in custody for successful reintegration back into the community is a primary goal of BC’s Youth Custody Services. Youth Supervisors provide a safe and secure environment for youth to access a variety of educational and rehabilitative programs.
Youth Supervisors work a shift pattern, and each shift begins with information exchanges and security inspections. Youth Supervisors are members of a team, maintaining security and supervision on the living units, and ensuring proper movement of youth throughout the centre. Youth Supervisors also help supervise and deliver a variety of educational and rehabilitative programs to youth. They have the opportunity to rotate into a variety of positions within the centre (e.g. programs, case management, control centre, etc.) and outside of the centre (Intensive Support and Supervision Program, a community-based program working with youth).
Career Prospects
The Ministry for Children and Family Development employs Youth Supervisors in British Columbia. Job opportunities are posted on the BC Public Service Employment Opportunities website.
All Youth Supervisors begin working as auxiliary staff (on-call). The salary range for Youth Supervisors is from $21 to $26 an hour.
Newly hired Youth Supervisors are required to complete the Youth Supervisor Basic Training Program. The training is a mix of online, classroom, and on-the-job learning, provided at the youth custody centre.

Personal qualifications
- Good judgement
- Healthy lifestyle
- Strong computer skills
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Self-control in stressful situations and tense encounters
Minimum Requirements
- Valid BC Class 5 driver’s license
- Current basic first aid certification (OFA level one)
- Successful completion of the Correctional Officer Physical Abilities Test (COPAT)
- Criminal records check screening
- A combination of education plus work and/or volunteer experience:
- High school graduation/equivalent and five years of work experience, working with challenging, populations preferably youth; or
- Two years of college and three years of work experience, working with challenging populations, preferably youth; or
- University degree and one year of work experience, working with challenging populations, preferably youth.
