Research, Innovation & Scholarship
The Centre for Research, Innovation & Scholarship advances justice and public safety through applied research to generate, exchange, transfer and mobilize knowledge.
The Centre for Research, Innovation & Scholarship (CRIS) supports the JIBC vision of being a "world leader in justice and public safety education and research" through an integrated program of work with a pan-institute focus and mission, including strategic and operational objectives as we move forward to build research capacity and leadership.
Our vision is to help keep communities safe through an active applied research agenda that engages first responders, first receivers, practitioners, policy makers, stakeholders and services users. We achieve this by developing new knowledge in emerging disciplines that informs best practice and public policy, enhances justice and public safety curriculum, and leverages learning technologies and methodologies with the result of increasing public awareness.
We do this by building capacity in scholarship, advancing the development of our disciplines and professions, and leading applied justice and public safety research.
The SAFER Research Framework defines how JIBC engages with community, carries out research, evaluates the impact of research, and mobilizes and translates knowledge.
JIBC's Applied Research collaborates with public and private sector partners to attract and secure ongoing funding. Our multi-million dollar research portfolio includes grants, contracts, and proposal commitments. The results of these projects lead to improvements in public policy, community awareness, field practice, and improved education for those who keep our communities safe.
JIBC's learning and research repository, The Vault, provides online open access to the works of JIBC researchers. It preserves and collects the scholarship of faculty and students in the form of articles, research reports and posters, and student capstones. The JIBC Library also holds print copies of some JIBC research reports.
