Policing is a demanding and challenging job. Police officers perform service based on preserving the peace, protection of life and property, preventing crime, apprehending offenders, and enforcing the laws.

As you can imagine, these responsibilities mean that every day is different. Police may spend much of their time patrolling to prevent crime before it occurs. They may also be busy attending scenes of major crimes, responding to hold up alarms, arresting criminals, consoling victims of traumatic events, operating police vehicles in emergency situations, keeping order at major events, enforcing traffic laws, giving evidence in court, and more.

Qualifications

There are 12 police departments in BC and their minimum qualifications may vary. The basic requirements that applicants must meet before enlistment are:

  • Canadian citizen or landed immigrant
  • Minimum age 19 years
  • Excellent character
  • Valid Class 5 BC drivers license
  • Certified in Standard or First Responder First Aid and CPR
  • Grade 12 graduate plus one year of post-secondary education
  • Physically fit and in excellent health

Applications

All applications to become a police constable are made to each individual Municipal Police Department.

Salary

The salary and pensions compare favourably with other police forces across Canada. Most police forces work a 4-day on, 4-day off schedule of either 11 or 12 hour shifts.

The following salaries are approximate:

  • Probationary Constable $45,500
  • 4th Class Constable $52,500 (after one year service)
  • 3rd Class Constable $56,000 (after two years service)
  • 2nd Class Constable $63,000 (after three years service)
  • 1st Class Constable $70,000 (after four years service)

Training

The Recruit Training program is composed of three separate “blocks” of training.

Block I 
The first block of training (13 weeks) takes place at the Police Academy. It places heavy emphasis on police skills (such as driver training, firearms, arrest and control, investigation and patrol techniques), legal studies, physical fitness, foot drill (dress and deportment), and an introduction to the social sciences. The intent of Block I is to develop a relevant knowledge base for the Block II field training.

Block II 
In Block II, the recruit constable returns to their home police department for a period of 13 to 17 weeks. During this field-training component, the recruit works under the guidance and continuous assistance of an experienced, specially trained constable (known as a field trainer). The field trainer is responsible for ensuring that the recruit receives a wide exposure to general police work. As a result, the recruit has the opportunity to apply the knowledge gained in Block I within an operational setting.

Block III 
In Block III (8 weeks), the recruit constable returns to the Police Academy, bringing experience from the “street scene.” This block builds on the knowledge of Block I, and the practical experience of Block II, to prepare the recruit to function independently upon graduation. After successfully completing Block III, the recruit graduates as a “Qualified Municipal Constable” that is designated by regulation, pursuant to the Police Act.
