Project: Moving Forward Together: A Collaborative Approach to the Future of Sex Offence Treatment, Maintenance, and Supervision for individuals under community supervision.

Principal Investigator: Caroline Murdoch, Program Manager, School of Criminal Justice & Security, CCSD.

Project Dates: January 4, 2025 – September 17, 2025

Project Funding: $5,458.01 (JIBC SIG Exchange Grant – not previously funded)

Project Summary: This project supports Caroline Murdoch’s attendance at the 2025 ATSA (Association for the Treatment and Prevention of Sexual Abuse) 44th Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida (September 15–17, 2025). The primary objective is to advance a collaborative research initiative between JIBC, BC Corrections, and BC Mental Health and Substance Use Services (Forensic Psychiatric Services). The conference provides access to current evidence-based practices, risk assessment tools, and treatment models in sexual offending – directly informing JIBC’s Advanced Probation Officer (APO) Sexually Motivated Offence training program (CORR-1100, 1105 & 1106). Attendance will facilitate relationship-building with Forensic Psychiatric Services and other stakeholders, enabling the development of a joint research strategy examining sex offence treatment outcomes, supervision models, and recidivism under community supervision in B.C.

Partners: BC Corrections; BC Mental Health and Substance Use Services (Forensic Psychiatric Services / FSOP)

Outcomes and Benefits: Expected outcomes include: (1) ensuring JIBC’s APO training reflects the latest evidence-based practices in sex offence treatment and supervision; (2) advancing a formal collaborative research partnership between JIBC, B.C. Corrections, and Forensic Psychiatric Services; (3) developing preliminary research questions on treatment outcomes, supervision efficacy, and recidivism; and (4) strengthening JIBC’s position as a knowledge leader in public safety training. Probation officers and their clients under community supervision in B.C. will benefit most directly, with broader impacts on community safety and evidence-based policy in sexual offence management.
