Post-Disaster Building Assessment Environmental Scan: The Next Iteration
Principal Investigator: Ron Bowles
Research Team: Dawn Ursuliak, Pat Cullen, Prachi Singh
Project Dates: August 1, 2024 - TBA
Project Funding: $10,000
Project Summary: This initiative seeks to conduct a comprehensive environmental scan of current practices and knowledge related to Post-Disaster Building Assessment (PDBA), in partnership with BC Housing. The project aims to review and update literature and program documents that supported the initial PDBA project, examining how PDBA processes and procedures have evolved over the past seven years. Additionally, it will identify emerging trends and practices in PDBA and its relationship to emergency management, particularly focusing on the overlap with recovery efforts. The findings will inform the development of a refreshed and expanded PDBA program tailored to the British Columbia context.
Partners: BC Housing
Outcomes and Benefits: The environmental scan will provide BC Housing and other stakeholders with updated insights into PDBA practices, facilitating a comparison of current practices against exemplar programs. It will also serve as a foundational resource for developing a comprehensive, multi-partner funding proposal aimed at enhancing PDBA programs in British Columbia. By engaging JIBC students in the research process, the project supports the development of applied research skills and contributes to building institutional capacity in emergency management research.
Funding and Support: This project draws on funds research supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) through the Mobilize grant, administered by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canda.
