For Samantha Pittman, a career in Community Care Licensing was a natural progression. With years of experience in healthcare and supporting vulnerable populations, she was motivated to expand her impact—working to protect the health, safety, and dignity of people in care from a regulatory perspective.

To build the specialized knowledge required for this role, Samantha enrolled in the Justice Institute of British Columbia’s Advanced Specialty Certificate in Community Care Licensing (CCLO). Drawn by JIBC’s strong reputation and the recognized value of the training recognized by health authorities across British Columbia, she saw it as a meaningful step toward advancing her career.

What inspired you to pursue a career in the field of community care licensing, and why did you choose JIBC’s CCLO program?

My years of experience in healthcare and caring for vulnerable persons inspired me to pursue a career in Community Care Licensing. In this role, I can help protect the health, safety, and dignity of persons in care while utilizing my varied education, experience in front line care, and the knowledge and tools acquired in the program to enforce legislation and educate licensees.

Can you describe a memorable experience during your training at JIBC that helped prepare you for your career?

There are many memorable experiences in the program; however, what stands out to me the most includes my professional practice course experience when I had the opportunity to utilize administrative law principles, ethics in licensing, conflict resolution principles and apply them to real life scenarios.

How has the CCLO program helped with your career, and what are you doing now?

The CCLO program gave me an advantage in terms of gaining employment as a Licensing Officer - health authorities widely recognize this program. Furthermore, understanding the legislation and the additional intricacies of licensing processes and procedures was a huge advantage. I have been working as a Community Care Facilities Licensing Officer for nearly three years and love my job.

What advice would you give someone who’s considering enrolling in the CCLO program at JIBC?

The advice I would give to someone who is considering enrolling in the CCLO program at JIBC is that it will require hard work, and they will gain valuable skills to support their role as a Community Care Facilities Licensing Officer.
