Course Details

The student will be exposed to an overview of the court system in B.C. with the focus being on the Provincial Family Court - rules, processes, and forms. They will learn about the role of the family justice counsellor (FJC) in helping clients when needing to access court. Students will be introduced to all the various court applications (i.e. pathways into court), associated court processes and protocols. Students will also be introduced to enforcement and interjurisdictional processes as well as services that assist with these processes (e.g. Maintenance Enforcement and Locate Services). They will learn how to initiate client searches, conduct Civil Electronic Information Searches (CEIS) and perform their duties as a Commissioner for Taking Affidavits. Furthermore, this course will explain how family justice counsellors assist clients who have reached an agreement and do not want to go to court. Students will be exposed to the different types of documents a family justice counsellor can draw up and the proper terminology to use in capturing parenting arrangements.
