Changes include more activity in common spaces, new portable classrooms and reduced parking
Starting in September 2025, JIBC will expand its Police Academy recruit training program in response to a provincial mandate aimed at addressing police staffing shortages across British Columbia.
This expansion means an increase in class sizes from 64 to 96 recruits per cohort that will result in a more visible presence of uniformed police recruits on campus.
What students and visitors can expect:
- More activity in shared spaces. Police recruit training includes hands-on, scenario-based learning that often takes place in public areas on campus.
- New portable classrooms. To accommodate the increased numbers, five portable classrooms will be installed — three at our New Westminster campus and two at Maple Ridge. Construction and installation work has started with modular fencing surrounding the construction areas. Please stay out of fenced-off areas.
- Reduced parking. The new portables will result in a parking reduction at both campuses. Students are encouraged to plan ahead and carpool or take transit.
- Construction activity. Please follow directions on signs, avoid construction areas, and do not enter fenced off areas.
These changes support our ongoing commitment to delivering realistic, experience-based training that prepares police officers to respond thoughtfully and effectively in high-pressure situations.
