Context/Purpose

The purpose of this Policy is to clarify the Institute’s rationale for and use of video surveillance on its campuses, in compliance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (British Columbia) (“FIPPA”).

Policy Statement

Surveillance is used by the Institute for the purpose of protecting student and staff safety and to ensure the protection of the property and assets of the Institute. The Institute recognizes the need to balance an individual’s right to privacy with the Institute’s duty to protect the safety of staff, students, visitors and property. Surveillance is not intended for the purposes of ongoing monitoring of employee performance or conduct.  However, the Institute reserves the right to access and use surveillance recordings for investigative purposes, including in relation to misconduct by staff or students.

Scope

The Institute collects information by closed circuit television (CCTV), utilizing camera systems in accordance with Sections 26 and 27 of FIPPA. The Institute recognizes that CCTV recordings are subject to the provisions of FIPPA.
