Police Academy launches new Indigenous cultural safety training
When it comes to Indigenous cultural safety training, there’s no such thing as one size fits all.
That’s what the JIBC Police Academy learned when it incorporated a provincial training program on the topic into its police recruit curriculum. The program was originally designed for health care workers and the scenarios and examples used simply didn’t meet the needs of police recruit training.
Indigenous artwork unveiled on Police Academy vehicles
The Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) Police Academy unveiled new Indigenous artwork on its fleet of training vehicles recently, a visual representation of the Institute and academy’s commitment to Indigenization.
xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) artist Kamryn Sparrow was commissioned to create the artwork as part of JIBC’s strategic plan commitment to living Indigenous ways of thinking, being, relating and doing. A key strategy of this commitment is to ensure campuses include high-visibility art and items symbolizing our commitment to Indigenous education.

The Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC) was pleased to welcome participants to its Indigenous Youth Career Camp (IYCC) at its campuses last week, July 18 to 22, where they gained an introduction to public safety career options. This is the first fully in-person IYCC since the pandemic began more than two years ago.
