Why did you choose to get involved with the ACP Program at JIBC?
As I mentioned, JIBC was my starting place. However, as I developed my career and practice, it was made clear to me by my colleagues and the physicians we worked with, that Paramedicine is a constantly evolving profession and to stay current is imperative. Also, that teaching is a professional responsibility. What better way to stay up to date than to be involved in the education of new paramedics? Not only am I able to stay current with changes to our scope of practice, but I am also able to keep up with new generations of students and how they view their place in the world of Emergency Services. The Paramedic Academy at JIBC has always been one of the premier paramedic training schools in the world, with the highest standards, and most devoted people. The Paramedic Academy selects instructors with its goals and history in mind. I am proud to be part of that team.
What do you bring to the ACP Program?
I think the most valuable commodities I bring to the ACP Program’s students are the things that have rung true to me throughout my career. Experience is of great value when putting what are sometimes abstract concepts into practice. I can reach into my past and give context to a principle. Commitment is of great value when helping students define their own career. I began with a commitment to ongoing education, professionalism, and high standards of care. Students are able to see, even after 40+ years, my passion and enthusiasm remain. The reality and consequence of what Paramedics do take a toll but are also the greatest rewards. I believe I can show students how to view the profession in that light.
Why should students choose JIBC’s ACP Program?
There can be no doubt that the Paramedic Academy at the Justice Institute of BC is a leader in Public Safety Education in Canada. I have been involved since its early days, and the level of education and professionalism have been unwavering. JIBC operates like a true post secondary institution.
