For Hayden Anthony, a Law Enforcement Studies Diploma student at JIBC, studying abroad in the United Kingdom was an opportunity to experience a different culture while gaining valuable insight into another criminal justice system.
From September to December 2025, Hayden studied at the University of Portsmouth, where she immersed herself in academic life and the local community. Her motivation for participating in the exchange program was simple: to expand her knowledge and learn more about other countries, their history, and different approaches to law enforcement.
The country and university were very welcoming to new students and very kind

A typical day abroad included walking to lectures, studying at the library with friends, preparing dinner, and spending evenings exploring the city and connecting with fellow students. Outside the classroom, Hayden joined the university's Tennis Society, which helped her meet new people and become a part of campus life.
Academically, the experience gave her a new perspective on policing and criminal justice. By comparing the United Kingdom's approach to offender management with Canada's, Hayden gained a broader understanding of how different legal systems operate and how cultural context shapes law enforcement practices.

Like many students studying abroad, Hayden also encountered challenges. Finding suitable housing proved difficult in the beginning, but through ongoing communication, she was eventually able to improve her situation. Looking back, she says the experience taught her patience, honesty, and the importance of speaking up for herself.
One of Hayden's favourite memories was discovering the UK's unique food scene with friends, visiting restaurants that can only be found there. She also recommends that future exchange students take every opportunity to get involved on campus and explore their host country.
Her advice for future JIBC students considering study abroad?
Join a student society, and travel whenever you can.

Reflecting on the experience, Hayden says studying abroad has broadened both her worldview and her understanding of criminal justice. She encourages other students to participate if they have the opportunity, noting that while financial planning is important, the personal and academic rewards make the experience worthwhile.
