Course Details
Students will learn about the different levels of government and how government laws and policies affect law enforcement. This will involve an examination of the Canadian constitution and the division of powers, a brief history of policing, the roles of municipal police boards, police commissions, councils and government ministries in governing police forces in their jurisdictions, the relationship of governing bodies with police executives, and the difficult balance between the desire to maintain police independence from political influence and the desire of politicians and governing bodies to direct and control police actions and policies.
This course is only open to students who have been admitted to the Bachelor of Law Enforcement Studies. Please see the BLES program page for more information, and for instructions on how to apply to the program.
