Course Details

In this course, you will examine how perceptions of power and privilege and their influence on conflict are framed by one's world view, cultures, and place of relative privilege in society. You will identify the spectrum of power sources, their relation to privilege, and assess the sources you access to bolster your own sense of power. By gaining an internal barometer of power in conflict, you will distinguish when you and others are using power and privilege for constructive or destructive purposes. You will learn to recognize power behaviours in yourself and others, and acquire strategies to increase collaborative uses of power. Through video simulations, self-reflective exercises, and small-group discussions and activities, you will recognize how privilege can present in conflict, gain comfort with power dynamics and identify how power can be used positively to enhance the collaborative process.

Registration in this course is limited to students enrolled in the Certificate in Collaborative Conflict Resolution OR Conflict Resolution: Specialization in Mediation/Third-Party Intervention OR Conflict Resolution: Specialization in Negotiation Program.
