If you're interested in learning why expressive play therapy is preferred to help children who do not respond to more traditional play therapy approaches and how it can address emotional, cognitive, and behavioral issues, this program is for you.

Complex Trauma Issues  

Learn how to use expressive play therapy methods to help children safely deal with painful issues related to complex trauma.

Counsellors, therapists, clinical social workers and other practitioners currently working in the field with children, youth, adults, families and communities, and those who wish to enhance their skills and knowledge in expressive play and sand play therapeutic interventions. This program is appropriate for learners with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent work/study experience.

Program strengths

This certificate prepares students to implement therapeutic materials conducive to creating a safe and therapeutic space for children and youth who have experienced loss, trauma, abuse and/or neglect.

Students learn about the application of creative imagery and how to work with recurring images in art, sand play, and general play of children through the various stages of the play therapy process.  

Each course is designed with demonstrations of actual cases as well as providing opportunities for an experience that includes the exploration of the image-making process through the use of a variety of mediums including toys, art supplies, sand tray and figurines. 

Students learn how to provide safe, effective interventions and to choose and implement therapeutic materials conducive to creating a safe and therapeutic space for children and youth who have experienced loss, trauma, abuse and/or neglect.  

You will gain an in-depth knowledge of the theoretical principles of holistic expressive therapy as related to the subject of trauma, complex trauma, dissociation, and post-traumatic stress disorder in the counselling setting.   

Students who hold a Master’s degree in a related field may apply for continuing education units towards registration with the Association for Play Therapy and certification with the Canadian Association for Child Play Therapy. How to complete the certificate
  • Receive the Associate Certificate in Expressive Play Therapy  by completing the following courses: COUN-3100, COUN-3105, COUN-3110, COUN-3115 and COUN-3220. 

Successful completion of all courses and full attendance is required. 

Tuition

Tuition for the program is approximately $1,800 and is paid on a course-by-course basis. Please check the individual course for tuition fees.  

For individual course fees, please see course descriptions. Courses after April 1st are subject to a 2% tuition increase. A learner services fee will be applied per credit. 

Additional Fees 

Non-Refundable Certificate Application Fee $75.

Textbooks & Supplies

Course manuals are supplied when you attend class.

Once you have met all requirements, (completing the following courses: COUN-3100, COUN-3105, COUN-3110, COUN -3115 and COUN-3220) you can then apply online to graduate and receive a certificate for the Associate Certificate in Complex Trauma.  

STEP 1 - Assemble Supplemental Documents

Submit it with your supplemental documentation and payment. 

1. A 250-word "Letter of Intent" describing your interest in the program and previous related education, training and/or experience. 
2. Your resume.
3. Letter of Reference from your employer.

STEP 2 - Apply to the Program

Complete the online application form. Submit it with your supplemental documentation and payment.

There is a $75 non-refundable application fee. You may include payment with your completed application form or call the Admissions Office to pay your fee over the phone by credit card.
