Course Details

This course presents evidence-based theory, skills and approaches for managing one's own intense emotions and behaviours, and for responding to intense emotion in others. Intense emotions are often viewed as scary, immature, weak, or, at best, unproductive. However, our ability to recognize, validate, and interpret intense emotion in ourselves and in others is key to remaining aligned to our collaborative intent in resolving conflict. Topics such as cultural expressions of emotion, emotion activators, emotions and physiology, self-regulation, defusing and disengaging from intense encounters are explored. Emphasis is on self-awareness and skill development through small-group exercises.

Online: The online version of this course is highly interactive and follows a pre-determined timeline with both live sessions (also called synchronous or sync) and self access (a-synchronous or a-sync) activities. Participants should plan to spend a full day (8 hours) for each course day to complete these activities. The live session (sync) activities are completed online through a virtual classroom with other students and the instructor. The self access activities (a-sync) will be completed on your own during designated times throughout the day.

Learners must have a camera and microphone. For an improved learning experience learners are encouraged to use a headset with mic rather than the computer speakers and internal mic. This course was previously offered in a face-to-face format only.
