The Trauma & Crisis Intervention (TCIN) program exists to help people from a broad range of professional backgrounds better manage critical incidents and those affected by them. With a unique approach you won’t find elsewhere, the TCIN program will equip you with the knowledge, theory and practical skills to support people experiencing psychological and emotional stress in the immediate aftermath of a traumatic event.

So If you're someone who encounters crises in your work, has a passion for helping others, or you’re considering a new career path post-pandemic and are interested in learning about how to better support people through crisis intervention and critical incident stress management, this program is for you.

COURSE DELIVERY

The Associate Certificate in Trauma and Crisis Intervention is a hybrid model and will involve both online courses and face to face courses offered at the JIBC New Westminster campus.

Expert Instruction

Learn from JIBC's experienced, expert instructors. Our faculty have years of experience in trauma and crisis intervention and are often called on as experts in this field. Our instructors are passionate teachers who know how to bring their in-depth experience with critical incident stress management and trauma and crisis intervention into the classroom. 

This program is designed for individuals from a broad range of occupations and professions who may be required to provide or manage support services following a traumatic event or critical incident.

The TCIN program is beneficial for anyone who works with people who may encounter traumatic incidents including advisors in human resources, schools and post-secondary institutions, first responders such as firefighters, paramedics, law enforcement, front line responders such as emergency social services, crisis intervention, victim services, healthcare workers such as nurses, doctors and child welfare workers.

The program can be done predominantly online at complete within a short timeframe.

Our leading-edge approach provides the theory, philosophy and practical skills to provide support to those who have experienced a critical incident, as well as innovative, hands-on learning opportunities to practice crisis intervention techniques in a supportive environment and hone your skills.

Throughout the course of the TCIN program, you will learn how to effectively manage traumatic events and the emotional health and safety for those involved.

Our innovative approach integrates various theories, modalities and practices for crisis intervention including one-on-one defusing, psychological first aid, group debriefing, vicarious trauma prevention planning and Critical Incident Stress Management. The program highlights the importance of inclusive, responsive and trauma-informed approaches to supporting diverse populations in crisis, and self-care for one’s own emotional well-being. The program will provide you with the knowledge and skills to offer emotional support to those who have experienced a traumatic event as well as yourself and your colleagues. You’ll also gain the practical core skills to guide people through crisis states.

What You Need to Graduate

Completion of 5.5 of the required credits, attend the training in full, achieve a pass on all courses and the CISM Simulation (CISM-1020). Courses must be completed within four years and full attendance is required.

The required courses one must take to successfully complete the Associate Certificate in Trauma and Crisis Intervention are:

  • CISM-1000: Introduction to Critical Incident Stress Management      
  • CISM-1030 Applied Psychological First Aid
  • CISM-1005: Diversity and Trauma
  • CISM-1035:  Post-Critical Incident Stress Reactions
  • CISM-1050: Vicarious Traumatization
  • CISM-1010:  Defusing and Crisis Management Briefing
  • CISM-1015: Critical Incident Stress Debriefing
  • CISM-1020: CISM Simulation

Graduates of the Associate Certificate in Trauma and Crisis Intervention can apply for certification with the Association of Traumatic Stress Specialists (ATSS). For more information about ATSS certification visit www.atss.info.

We also offer special interest general enrollment courses listed below in the area of trauma and crisis intervention that are not required for certificate completion, but which provide valuable and important skills and information. The following courses may count towards one’s professional development credits with ATSS.

  • CISM-1055: Trauma and Suicide: Risk and Prevention
  • CISM-1040: Building and Participating on a CISM Team
  • CISM-1045: Supporting Children and Youth Post-Trauma
  • CISM-1025: Managing Responses to Community Disasters
Program Format

The program is a hybrid model of virtual and face to face. Some courses are offered online and some courses are offered in-person at the New Westminster campus. While any student may take the virtual courses without being registered in the certificate, one must be in the certificate program to attend the following in-person classes:

  • CISM-1010:  Defusing and Crisis Management Briefing
  • CISM-1015: Critical Incident Stress Debriefing
  • CISM-1020: CISM Simulation

Successful completion of all assignments and full attendance is required. The certificate can be completed in one year; learners have a maximum of four years to complete all required courses.

Tuition for the program is approximately $2,430.61

Each course is paid for separately during course registration.

Additional Fees

In order to successfully complete the TCINAS Certificate, an application fee of $75 will be required to be paid via the BC Education Planner.

Course materials are supplied when you attend class. If additional books or other materials are required, you will be advised when you register for the program.

Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) is a comprehensive, integrated, multi-component crisis intervention system for managing traumatic events within organizations or communities.
